What should be the ideal weight

In the past, the most common formula for calculating ideal weight was the Body Mass Index (BMI). This index was also used to assess the risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

However, scientists later found out that if the fat accumulation occurs in the abdominal area, it is particularly harmful to health, therefore it is not enough that the BMI is within the normal range, it is also necessary that the fat does not accumulate in the abdominal area. Thus, a number of specialists began to use the neck circumference as an indicator of normal weight. It was considered that it should be no more than 92 cm for men and 82 cm for women.

Modern medicine considers that there is no such thing as an ideal weight, and in the case of excess weight, which can lead to health problems, a 10% reduction in weight already leads to an improvement in the patient’s clinical condition.

Thus, people suffering from obesity today are first recommended to lose 10% of their weight within 6 months. When that goal is reached, the patient’s condition is evaluated again and a decision is made whether it is necessary to lose another 10% of weight.

When losing weight, it is very important to set a realistic goal. If you set a difficult goal for yourself and do not achieve it, it will be very difficult psychologically.

The formula recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for determining normal weight:

For women

Normal weight = 50 + (height-150) 0.32 + (age-21).5
For example, a 25-year-old woman with a height of 165 cm should weigh:
50 + (165-150) 0.32 + (25-21). 5 = 55.6. That is, about 56 kg.

For men

Normal weight = 50 + (height – 150) 0.75 + (age – 21). 5:00
For example, the normal weight of a 30-year-old man with a height of 175 cm should be:
50+(175-150)0.75+(30-23).5=70.55. That is, about 71 kg.

Fluctuations in the amount of body fluid cause daily fluctuations in weight. Therefore, to determine your body weight, weigh yourself once a week, exactly on the same day and time.

Remember that metabolic state and other factors that affect weight are individual and depend on a person’s age, gender, health, etc. With age, a person should change his eating habits. If an individual takes the same amount of food and maintains the same physical activity at the age of 20-40, then at the age of 40 his body weight is usually greater.

This is explained by the fact that metabolic activity changes with age. With age, it is necessary to use food that provides the body with necessary nutrients, but contains few calories.
